"There's absolutely nothing subtle about a Soul Sessions. And you better believe that a Soul Sessions
Anniversary is a celebration of sweat, smiles, and sonic wobble. So the 1st Anniversary of Soul Sessions
at the festive Grand Star in Chinatown was friends and family with an overdose of suggested groove.
Inside stirred the Soul Sessions collective, who blessed the evening with a constant junky funk, with projections of art and dancing shadows on disco-splattered walls. Extra elegance abounded with hosts Tunji and Toquon on the mic, along with Trek Life to boot. There was enough of the sure shot to shock the crowd into a pleasant head nod frenzy. And I can nod with the very best of them. "The Funk Pirates" on the decks aiming hip hop at the crowd, along with the evening's special ingredient, Icy Ice, who did to death what he does best, mixing genres into storms to juggle with icy precision and grace. What can I say? It was a session for the soul, a vacation from the mundane, an invitation to the new wane. Free and feeling every nuance of the music that matters most -the music of the people, by the people, and for the people. A slice of heaven and an anniversary: no wonder the Soul Sessions got hot so quick. Good thing you can slide outside for a breeze and silly freestyle dance cypher that could qualify as a hoedown in any culture. Outside, where the real party was with Frank E on the decks and a crowd of beauties and bubbly lubricated b-boys, there was bound to be a spark or two. I was grateful for the opportunity to visit Soul Sessions and leave my offering of participation. Although it was my first time, I'm sure I'll find myself at Soul Sessions again. Soul Sessions @ Grand Star every other Friday (opposite Firecracker). Don't do it for me, do it for your soul."

"Resident rhymers Tunji and DJ Blitz provide lyrical poetry to the beats of turntablists The Funk Pirates and DJ Neight. Jazz, funk and soul bands also add to the upbeat ambiance in the double-decker Chinatown bar."
"Soul Sessions also offers outdoor dance-offs, projected art and an aura of positivity."
